Excellent sermon. Was Peter’s comment to build shelters a reference to the feast of tabernacles? Does this feast get celebrated during the millennial reign?
Hi Terry, you ask tough questions. Here is my attempt at an answer.
Was Peter’s comment to build shelters a reference to the feast of tabernacles?
Some think it is a reference to the Feast of Tabernacles. However, Luke 9:34 adds that Peter didn’t know what he was saying. After Peter’s curious remark the voice from the cloud interrupts him and there is no clarification or elaboration on Peter’s reference to tents. Finally, at the end the transfiguration (Matt. 17:8) the focus is exclusively on Jesus. For this reason I don’t think it is, at least not a very clear reference.
Does this feast get celebrated during the millennial reign?
I think you probably know my answer to that but here is my thought process. First, does the Bible say that this feast, or any other feast, will be (or won’t be) celebrated during the millennial reign? Second, how does observing this feast relate to Jesus? Paul mentions in Colossians 2:16-17 that things like feasts and Sabbath days are a shadow of things to come but the substance belongs to Christ. Why would people go back to observing a shadow? The same is true of animal sacrifices. If Jesus is the only sacrifice for sin, and, according to Hebrews, the law along with is priesthood and sacrifices could never take away sin (Hebrews 10:1-10), why would people go back to offering animal sacrifices at some future point? Would this be something that pleases God the Father? After all he says the he is well-pleased with Jesus.
It seems to me that what we understand about Jesus and his work of salvation and how we understand that work in relation to the Old Testament influences end-times view significantly.
What is Zachariah 14:3-21 referring to? I’ve always thought it was the return of Christ and the millennial reign. Is Zachariah referring to literal events when he speaks of Jesus standing on the mount of olives and it splitting in two and of plagues where peoples and animals flesh melt and that all the nations that came against Israel will go there to worship God and will keep the feast of tabernacles?
